They Said It Was Impossible: We Rode Into Kyrgyzstan to Find the World’s Last Wild Cannabis

Arjan and Dust just rode horseback through the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, following ancient Silk Road routes in search of rare cannabis landraces that have grown wild and untouched for generations.

This is the full Strain Hunters Kyrgyzstan Expedition documentary, from first meeting our Kyrgyzstan connection Allan (Toropkh) in Bangkok, to days on horseback across some of the most remote terrain we’ve ever filmed in, a stop at the world-famous Nomad Games, and a deep push into high-altitude valleys where wild cannabis has adapted to isolation, climate, and terrain for centuries.

None of this happens without the people on the ground. Huge thanks to Allan, who connected us to Kyrgyzstan and made the whole expedition possible, and to our local guides Akzhol, Anatoly, and Adilet, Kyrgyzstan activists and members of the country’s anti-drug coalition, who brought us safely into terrain we could never have navigated alone and gave us honest insight into the region’s culture, land, and policy.
